Five Milwaukee Road GP-series diesels rest on the garden tracks next to the turntable at the railroad’s West Milwaukee (Wisconsin) Shops in 1984. In the following year, the bankrupt railroad would cease to exist, merged into the Soo Line. Milwaukee County Stadium, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, is in the background. Today, none of this once-sprawling shop complex remains, and Miller Park has replaced County Stadium. But on the hill at the top of the photograph still stands the tower of the veterans hospital at Wood, Wisconsin, a National Historic Landmark initially erected to treat Civil War veterans and still in service.
