An NS manifest heads west alongside the French Broad River, nearing Newport, TN. The railway follows the river through the mountains, and is actually a key reason that the river is still beautiful and free-flowing. While the state has wanted to dam up the river (one of the 3 oldest rivers in the world) to harness the energy, the right of way of the railway takes precedence.
