All is silent on the Gunnison Line... The Denver & Rio Grande Western stretched westward toward the booming gold mines of the mighty west bound for mines near Crested Butte and points westward. When the track reached Gunnison in August 1881, the difficult challenge of continuing the narrow gauge route through the depths of the Black Canyon was presented. At first, a 20 mile line was constructed through the canyon, but William Jackson Palmer's envisions of a scenic rail rout and the riches of western gold pushed the railroad farther into the great abyss within the Black Canyon's rock walls. The line eventually was completed, and there was a direct connection between the city of Montrose and the eastern world via the DRGW's black canyon route and the Gunnison Line stretching east of Gunnison toward the famed Tennessee Pass. But as so many other aspects of history have, the mining industry died and cattle began to be shipped by rail less and less, thus the area's rail lines went extinct, booming mining towns became ghost towns, and much of the regions life died. On this day, a couple era-appropriate cars sit not far from the former location of the mainline that connected Gunnison and the Black Canyon rout to the eastern world via Tennessee Pass along highway 50 east of Gunnison.
