Remarks & Notes
Across the Border

Amtrak's northbound Downeaster, train number 693 (Boston MA to Portland ME) crosses from New Hampshire into Maine as it crosses the Salmon Falls River, which is the boundary between the two states. Amtrak P42DC 22 is on the head-end, and Non-Powered Control Unit 90214 is on the rear. NPCUs are former F40PH diesels, with the prime mover removed and a baggage compartment added. Note that 90214 has had the white Scotchlite Downeaster lettering replaced with much more legible blue lettering. The Salmon Falls River, as with all rivers in the Northeast, is running low due to a drought in the region.

When Amtrak began, it served none of the three northern New England states. Today, all have service and there is talk of expansion.
