| Mount Washington Cog Railway is one of the most unique railroads in the world. The 3 mile stretch of track to the Summit of the 6288' Mount Washington is the second steepest railroad in the world with grades from 25 to 37 percent. The railroad was once all steam however due to operational cost and environmental reasons there are only two working steam locomotives left in the fleet. The Cog now uses a fleet of six modern bio diesels powered by John Deere motors. The newest locomotive which is designed M-6 is already in service before it can even be lettered to keep up with the demand of the fall foliage crowds. The snow covered peak of the 5,553 foot Mount Clay can be seen in the background. |
