Southern Pacific's Chicago to Roper Manifest Freight creeps slowly down Soldier Summit approaching the upper Gilluly horseshoe on Aug. 24, 1996. On the point is speed lettered SD40T-2 No. 8361 followed by three SP 'cinder block' sisters on this fine morning just 18 days before the merger with the Union Pacific Railroad. Those with a sharp eye may spy a second train several miles below by rail on a third level of track along the main highway.
