Shadows and Highlights. After stopping for water (and lunch), the White Pass Rotary Fleet leaves Fraser Station, bound for Log Cabin and eventually Bennett. As the train curves off to the left in the photo, it is beginning to run along the shore of Fraser Lake....which of course, is still frozen and snow-covered. Behind the plow train, the headlight of our diesel-powered chase train can be seen at the station platform. For the next few miles of chasing, we would leave the train behind and ride on a chase bus supplied by the railroad. We would re-board the train later at Log Cabin.
Fraser Station is the location of Canadian Customs. The actual Customs building is just above the snow-covered bluff on the right, and the railroad station is a hundred yards or so directly behind the train. Passengers on trains passing this point must stop, present their passports and be cleared by the Canadian Agents. This was the first time in three days of photographing the rotary operation that we actually needed our passports despite the fact that the US/Canada Border is about 8 miles back, and technically, we'd all been trespassing in Canada for a couple of days. Apparently, that didn't bother the Canadians, so we were cool with it.
