Look Ahead Look South
Southern Rwy 3170, the very first, is sitting outside of its new temporary home at the Tennessee Valley Railroad's East Chattanooga Shop, after staring in a night photo session for the Southern Railway Historical Association. The locomotive is going to go in for a major over haul which mean replacing the EMD 16-645-E3 prime mover, and getting it back into operation condition. Southern Railway 3170 was the very first of the SD40 delivered to the Southern Railway in 1971 which started a revolution of bigger Super Duty power that was going to be use on the Southern, and it's successor Norfolk Southern.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
