Remarks & Notes
Twin Bridges - MP 489.9. Our Silverton Mixed crosses the Animas yet again just about 5 miles north of Needleton Tank. This location is known as "Twin Bridges" because there are two parallel bridges over the river, one of which is the steel girder bridge you see here, that is currently in use. This 222 ft. long bridge was built by the D&RGW in 1964 and replaces the old steel truss bridge which sits just yards to the west of it. The old bridge was built in 1884 and was replaced in the 1960s when the abutments were no longer deemed safe.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
