The boiler water is overflowing as Milwaukee Road Engineer John Schwab readies himself for the 196 mile trip to Lacrosse on the Empire Builder. I'll be Firing for John today and when I climb aboard I'll head straight to the engine rooms of the E and three F-units. As we depart I'll make my way back to make sure all units are loading. When I get to the rear unit I'll retrace my steps to the headend and make sure all units have made transition. If I find one that hasn't I'll have to jumper wire it. I should be back on the left hand seat after Harwood Ave in Wauwatosa where I'll blow down the boilers for the first time as we'll be out in the woods at 70 mph. My next trip back won't be till the station stop at Columbus,WI.. I'll make one more check at Tomah and just before we get into Lacrosse where John and I will get off and the River Division crew will board for the trip to the Twin Cities. The units will again get boiler water at Lacrosse.
