Remarks & Notes
The conductor, the dapper gentleman on the left, had about six more months until retirement. Although he had been offered a lump sum to take early retirement, he figured that by the time taxes, withholding and so forth had been deducted, he wouldn't have much left so he had declined the offer. Although he enjoyed the work, he lamented the long hours, especially in the 1960s, and the fact that he had missed so much of his daughters growing up. Before they started to gather the loads, he called the rear brakeman and flagman onto the cab's back porch so I could get a photo of them. Couldn't have met a nicer gentleman but unfortunately, I failed to get his name.
