Only memories?, Or will good news come?: That narrow white color seen in the photo, is the Salado River, normally with an insignificant flow, practically dry. In March of 2015 there were unexpected rains in this area, it had never rained so much, which generated a large flood of water and mud that wiped out everything in its path. It descended from the mountain range following the course of the Salado river, destroying Montandon, Llanta (FERRONOR yard and facility), Diego de Almagro, El Salado and Chañaral. Evidently, the Potrerillos - Diego de Almagro - Chañaral railway operated by FERRONOR, was destroyed. It has been 3 years, it was always said that this railway would not be rebuilt ... but it seems that could change. For now, the line has been reconstructed from Altamira to Diego de Almagro, and from Llanta to "Empalme 2". And additionally, if it is a novelty in the area, the "Longitudinal Norte" line is being reconstructed from Empalme 2 to Copiapó. It is not yet known if CODELCO and FERRONOR will decide to rebuild the entire railroad between Potrerillos and Chañaral, but it seems that the future looks promising.
