After helping a freight train on the eastern grade of Cumbres Pass, Rio Grande 2-8-2 K-27 No. 463 heads back to Chama light engine ahead of the freight on September 17, 1996. Snow is flying on top of the pass in this late summer view, framed by the porch on the old section house, which is also providing some shelter from the weather. Three-foot gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operated this Rio Grande freight train as a special charter for photographers.
