Remarks & Notes
Woodstock Lumber Company Shay #5. Completing Clark's collection of the major geared engine types is this little 2-Truck Shay, seen coming off the WMCRR's Howe Truss Covered Bridge....with a little assist from an unseen diesel on the tail end of the consist. Built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1917, this 50-ton, 2-Trucker was purchased new by the Woodstock Lumber Company in nearby Woodstock, NH. Eventually, the Woodstock Lumber Company became the Franconia Paper Company, This locomotive served its entire service life with the two firms, literally down the road from where she is now, and was sold to the Clark's in 1951. While the locomotive has been investigated as a possible restoration candidate, the results of that investigation showed that to get it running, you'd almost have to jack up the bell and build a new locomotive underneath. Yeah, she'd need more than a new boiler. Instead, the folks at Clark's have elected to restore it cosmetically, and did quite a bit of work on it to get it ready for the 60th anniversary show. Compared with the way she looked just half a dozen years ago, this little Shay looks pretty nice these days. She is normally stored indoors in the engine shed, so she is not exposed to the weather.
