The New York Central and Penn Central heritage units lead the head end of Norfolk Southern intermodal train 212 from Atlanta, GA to Jersey City, NJ on May 30, 2019. The train has just veered off of the Lehigh Line and is now on the former PRR Passaic and Harsimus Branch in Newark, NJ. The P&H Branch was an electrified freight bypass corridor to Harsimus Yard in Jersey City that lasted into the early years of Conrail. Eventually the yard was torn up and the catenary was removed but the line still proved to be a vital link for trains originating from the south/west to access the northern states. In 2019 the P&H Branch is one of the busiest sections of railroad in New Jersey due to it being shared by CSX and Norfolk Southern. Though the catenary is long gone, the catenary poles still remain showing its Pennsylvania Railroad heritage.
