Remarks & Notes
251’s Last Stand

Although Alco exited the locomotive business in 1969, Canadian subsidiary MLW continued building locomotives for the North American market into the 1980’s. Their last six-axle freight locomotive based on the Alco 251 design was the 3000 horsepower HR-616. Unfortunately, the so-called High Reliability series was just as trouble-plagued as the predecessor Century series, and the 20 HR-616’s sold to CN were the only ones built. Here one of the sleek “Draper-Taper” cowls teams with two prior-generation C630M’s to power a westbound manifest through Kingston, Ontario.
