Remarks & Notes
Despite being a port city, neither the port nor the railroad in San Diego has the necessary cranes and other equipment to handle intermodal trailers or containers. And yet, on July 15 the BNSF inaugurated a new double-stack train that originates in the city! The Port of San Diego does unload a number of ships carrying automobiles, and these Vehicle trains are now classed as Intermodal Stack trains. The V-SDGCLO trains, ferrying autoracks from San Diego to Clovis, New Mexico, are now S-SDGMEM trains. These new trains still haul autoracks east, but now at Clovis the trains have double-stack cars added and they continue on to Memphis, Tennessee. Thirteen days after this service began, BNSF train S-SDGMEM1-26 approaches the summit of Cajon Pass with a trainload of vehicles behind ES44DC 7347, ET44C4 3744, ET44C4 3754 and ES44DC 7775.
