Norfolk & Western J Class 4-8-4 No. 611 is an extraordinarily efficient steam locomotive. However, in comparison with its successor the diesel-electric, it is pretty awful in converting heat into power.

But that does not matter for there are few things that are as magnificent as a steam locomotive under way. This is a sight to stir the heart and excite the mind.
