Westbound approaches Thurmond..... Coal empties for southern West Virginia ease into Thurmond, silhouetting the Chesapeake & Ohio depot and a bad order hopper car. Soon to be greeted by a clear signal, the 150-car unit train will climb back to track speed and continue its westward trek through the New River Gorge under the cover of darkness. Sometime after dawn, the empty trainset will be spotted at a coal mine for loading and will return east in a few short days as a loaded coal drag for Newport News, Va.
Railroading is a 24 hour a day business, that never sleep. From sunset to sunrise the railroad must run. These image are taken by some of the best rail photographer out their.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
This is dedicated (with permission) to the skilled and gifted photographer - Chase Gunnoe - who regularly posts and is on staff with RP. I believe he deserves a gallery showcasing his remarkable photos. This is for you Chase! (More great photos to come!)
