| Crossing atop a frozen Whiteface River that's currently living up to its name, loaded Minntac pellets cruise south down the former DMIR Missabe Sub at Kelsey beneath crystal clear blue skies. This U71381 14 was loaded at US Steel Corporation's Minnesota Taconite (Minntac) mine at Mountain Iron and will dump at the docks down in Duluth, currently a massive stockpile for iron ore until the shipping lanes open back up in late March. Far from its once home on the old Mainline of Mid-America, Illinois Central SD40-3 #6252 dressed in its original black and white colors does the honors today on this frigid February afternoon. This locomotive has been a resident of Minnesota's Iron Range region since summer of 2008 and is one of several ex-IC SD40s currently living up here. |
