Amtrak train 3, the westbound Southbound Chief, is only five-hours late as it passes through Verdemont, at the base of Cajon Pass. Just ahead is a stop at San Bernardino, which will include a crew change (thanks to being so late) and, after departing, a fifteen-minute stop to get problems with the Positive Train Control fixed. BNSF ES44C4 7092 was added in Gallup NM after number 3’s lead engine, AMTK 41, was removed to assist Amtrak 4 (the eastbound Southbound Chief) when one of its two P42DCs quit running. As a result, number 3’s lone P42DC, number 90, overheated. And so, here the train is, in broad daylight instead of at sunup. (San Bernardino, California – June 27, 2020)
