Central of New Jersey's Bound Brook StationThis station, which is now a restaurant, opened on August 10, 1913 as a replacement for Central of New Jersey's three story station seen here. That station was in turn, built to replace a station built by the Elizabethtown & Somerville Railroad in 1848. The E&S, incidentally, was chartered to built a line between its namesake Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth) and Somerville in 1831. Somerville is the next station west of Bound Brook. After an 1847 bankruptcy, the line was reorganized to become the "new" Central Railroad of New Jersey, aka; Jersey Central. That railroad in turn, came under control of the Reading Company in 1901. With few changes, it is still used today by New Jersey Transit and NS/CSX. The "new" station seen above was designed by William I. Houghton, architect of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad,
The two major Eastern freight railroads—Norfolk Southern and CSX—generally dominate these tracks (along with New Jersey Transit passenger trains) making this a well known and highly visited railfan location.
