"May Gray" has changed into "June Gloom" (low-altitude stratus clouds which form over the cool water of the Pacific Ocean’s California Current, and spread overnight into the coastal regions of Southern California) even as far inland as Colton, California, 44-miles from the Pacific. On June 4, 1983, an eastbound Southern Pacific freight, led by Cotton Belt GP40-2 7640 (teamed with SP SD40 7329, SP B30-7 7828 and a pair of SD45T-2s), stops for a crew change at the railroad’s large West Colton Yard before continuing its journey eastward to Arizona … or westward to northern California – it all depends upon which route it takes just after the new crew gets underway. (Sadly, 38-years after the fact, I don’t recall which route this train took.)
