Remarks & Notes
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's 1309 is photographed inside of Brush Tunnel. 1309 is the second largest operating locomotive in the United States, and the largest in regular service. This 2-6-6-2 Mallet Type locomotive was the last steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for a North American railroad, signifying the soon-obsolescence of steam engines. Despite being constructed late in the steam era in 1949, the locomotive was built to nearly the same designs as those of 1910s, using antiquated Prewar technology from 40 years prior. The locomotive served a short service life on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad before retirement just seven years later in 1956. After retirement, the 1309 was stored in a roundhouse until being conveyed to the B&O Museum in Baltimore. Around 2014, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad decided to purchase, restore, and operate the 1309 after sitting idle for 64 years. In 2021, the hard work and fundraising by the WMSR paid off.

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
