Do you know what is with the single level cars in front? I've never seen that before.

those are horizon coaches. They are owned by Amtrak and were used before Superliners. In some areas, horizon coaches are still used. These coaches however are most likely traveling to los angeles where they can be put in to pacific surfliner service. There is most likely no passengers in these coaches because a baggage car seperates the superliners with these horizon coaches.
