This unit along with 4005 and 4006 were the only E units in the NYC fleet to be reequipped with the Hancock Air Whistles. Some other NYC diesels had them too! While they seemed to be just as effective as the standard diesel air horns as warning devices, they had a pleasant sound reminiscent of a steam locomotive whistle.
