It was the Southern Railways style to run their diesels long hood forward so NS just kept up with the tradition!

There's more to it than just tradition ... Southern ran long hood forward in order to offer the crew more protection from impacts with trucks etc. at grade crossings. The catch is that you can't see anything until it's too late when you're running long hood forward.

They put the stand along side the engineer so they could operate either direction easier.
