Actually the engine had some severe firebox issues developing. That is why NS sidelined the engine in 1982, and Ft. Wayne had to get permission from the FRA to operate the engine in 90's.

Thanks for that info. A museum member told me she was still under steam when flu and boiler time ran out. Just posted what I was told.

There was an opinion voiced at the time that the Southern Railway Steam Team, that were used to running much older locomotives, did not fully understand the more modern design of the Super Power locomotives. At the time the largest engine they had run was Ex-Southern #4501, a light 2-8-2. After #2716 was returned, they were able to get the more modern Norfolk & Western power. Number 2716 looked very good in Southern paint, but she was more than just paint as Road Foreman of Engines Bill Purdey, changed lots of details on the engine, making her a full size "kit bash".
