Chicago & North Western's four 2500 h.p. C425s, were obtained by trading-in its four 2400 h.p. DL640 locomotives. The DL640s had in turn been acquired by trading in C&NW's sole set of A-B-B-A FA/FB2 units, 4103A,B, and 4104A,B. The FA/FB units had originally been Alco-GE demonstrator set 1603A-1603D.
