Great picture! These plants were mechanical marvels, and, as stated, required muscles to work. I worked at Portage, Illinois, on the Illinois Central, and the plant there was about the same size as the one shown here. The stiffest lever to pull was for a seldom used, siding switch about 1/4 mile away--it would land you on your keester if you pulled it and lost your grip.

Great shot of some of the stuff we remember so well but is now mostly if not entirely gone. I wonder if there is an armstrong plant left in the U.S.

Z-Tower in Keyser WV is still in service. It is a working Armstrong plant. Located on the old B&O Mountain Sub., Between Cumberland Maryland and Grafton West Virginia. But.... CSX says that it's days are numbered.
