As street running has long disappeared in the UK its great to see examples such as this from around the world

Just a simple commuter train in the middle of the street. Did you say street?! Thank you John for the great image.

It is pretty insane that a triple track main line is shared with a street. Anyone know of the accident rate on this stretch of land per year?

Re triple track. Perhaps I should have clarified that the track closest to me is disconnected and out of service, but my comment was already long. So it is really only two active tracks down the street. Even so the question of accidents is an relevent one, but I have never heard of it being a major issue, and I live not too far away. And the trains do not exactly creep down the street, they move along at a reasonable pace.

Mr. West - wonderful photo of a very photographed area of Oakland, CA. I have seen video on YouTube about this line, and yes, the trains do move at a pretty good clip/speed, and it amazes me that there hasn't been any vidoe posted showing an accident (that I know of). I'm also surprised at how many videos and photos on RP.net show people climbing on and over the trains when they get a rare Red signal and have to park it in the middle of Embarcadero. Pedestrians can't wait to cross the street, or don't want to wait, and never take the time to walk to an area where they can cross in front of or behind the train safely so they just climb up/over the couplers. I'm surprised UP and/or even the Oakland City Council hasn't pushed for more pedestrian crossover bridges along this stretch. Still want to witness this operation in person myself someday! Again, wonderful photo.
