I've wanted to catch a train here for years. I just never can find the time to sit it out in Paris when I'm home in Mattoon visiting the parents. For those of you that don't know, Paris, IL used to be the crossing/junction of the PRR's Peoria branch, the NYCs egyptian line and their St. Louis main. For those of you that track abandonments, the Paris to Terra Haute line is one of two parts of the St Louis main that is still in. From Paris to Pana, IL it has been torn out. I think there is a 1/2 mile or so left in Shelbyville, IL. From Pana to St. Louis is owned and operated by Uncle Pete (formerly MoPac). C&EI had trackage rights on the NYC into St. Louis. When Conrail filed to abandon the line, MoPac baught it and immediately upgraded the line. Type G signals are used between Pana, IL and St. Louis.

Hey Pete, just for argument's sake, this wouldn't be a K594. I'm not sure what it would be, but K594 is westbound that goes by me. It is MVRY and YB gondolas filled with, I think, 8 inch pipe. Just thought I'd throw that out to help you figure out the symbol.

Pete: Was this train about 50 cars long, all with CP pipe flats and CP boxcars on each end? This train looks identical to trains the NS was running to Illiopolis, IL in late 2007 thru January 2008. There is a new natural gas pipeline being built from Colorado to Ohio by Rockies Express. The NS unloaded at least 15 trains at Illiopolis. The pipe is still stored in a field south of town waiting for the summer construction season. Here's a link about the project: http://www.rexpipeline.com/index_east.html The next pipeline pumping station to the east will be at Bainbridge, IN. I'd bet a good, solid nickel that CSX got this train off the NS at Decatur.
