The Hoods on EMD SW-1's always looked lower because of the front sand box, note the lift handles on the lid. That lid needs two handles because it's very heavy. One man can open these lids, but with two it's easier. With three men filling this box went faster, two men on the ground handing up sand bags, and one man on the unit filling the box. This was safer because no one had to climb on top of the hood, and small yards did not have to have an elevated sand tower. Oh and they had to fill the rear sand box as well. On larger EMD switchers the larger engine required a larger radiator that went down to the walkway which also made the hood look taller, even though it was the same height.

Thanks for the fine shot. After seeing this unit in March 2009 from the TX Eagle, I researched it and found that it was built in June, 1939 as EMD serial no. 901 as CB&Q 9140, to BN 85, then Potlatch Lumber 85, ISCX 9140 and finally to WATCO as WAMX 107.
