Wow.

This is a westbound extra #X-523 with appropriate white flags about to reach the Willamette River. It may pull into the yards just ahead along the east side of the river or continue through the yards north towards Seattle. Or another option is for it to cross the River on the Steel Bridge before getting to the yards, immediately pass next to Union Station, do work, then continue towards Seattle. The second unit looks like an FTB or F3B and the third an F7B or F9B. 523 was built in Sept. 1948. The scene could be shot today with the same color diesels as the location has not changed. The tracks in the foreground were SP's entering town from the south. Four Cascades use these now UP tracks each weekday as does the daily Coast Starlight in both directions. Portland remains an interesting railfan mecca. Thanks Jim for the yellow 1950s Fs in Portland.
