That crossover seems unnecessary, given that the siding ends just a few hundred feet away.

The crossover is used to access the Ft. Scott Sub to Kansas City, which splits off just out of view behind the containers. There is one more crossover that allows trains to cross the middle track and end up heading North on the far main. It's a very interesting track configuration. During the Frisco era, there used to be a diamond here that allowed trains out of downtown Springfield to cross the main line and head directly to Kansas City.
