Rail grinding significantly increases the friction between rail and wheel and can contribute to truck steering problems where a wheel will crab and scuff the inner gage of the rail rather then slide smoothly along. In extreme cases it can contribute to a derailment. Adding a bead to the top of the rail helps reduce this friction.

Just 1 nail holding the rail down? I know we can't see the other side of the rail, but would it not be better to check rail security before regrinding it?

One spike on each side is all you need on tangent track, curves, however, are a different story
