After a while, it becomes easy to figure out which train is which. Trains running west via BNSF will use the 2/3 tracks on the left in the picture, while trains running south via NS and CN will run on a combination of the 3 on the right. This train happens to be running to Orland Park on Metra's SWS line, train #819.

I certainly know that feeling. Last year I visited Chicago and found rush hour traffic to be a completely different animal from the 6-8 commuter trains I'm used to in Seattle.
