What is the segment of track in front of the door for?

You certainly get around the world Graham. I love the details you've managed to get in this photo. No bolts in the fishplate on one side, ballast stones in between the pont blade and stock rail and a human element as well.

Beautiful shot full of rich texture and shapes. The mud will keep the rails in gauge I assume.
