Classification lights go on the front of the engine to indicate the class of the train. Marker lights go on the rear to protect the train. The red light shines to the rear of the train in normal service. The marker light can be rotated to show the other aspects, which in these markers are all blue. These markers are from the Western Pacific Railroad and are marked WP. I don't have a Western Pacific rule book, so don't know why they used blue.
