There is a bit of redundancy here as the E-unit in Amtrak paint has already been rebuilt with a HEP set replacing its steam generator. The exhaust mufflers are at the rear of the roof and the HEP cooling fans are located over the center carbody access door. The power car was converted from a St. Louis Car-built U.S. Army Kitchen Car, and that Amcafe looks brand new. Nice catch, Don.

The Amcans were so maligned, but this new one seen here sure brings back good memories--this was the first new rolling stock for first gen Amtrak riders after the company inherited all the old equipment that was the butt of so many jokes. These represented a "new" era of passenger trains.
