The comment is misleading; in addition to the nearby passenger terminal, the Bickerdyke Basin area directly adjacent to old Montreal is still an active portion of the port, handling grain, containers and general cargo on a regular basis. The slips and draught in the western reaches of the port are more restrictive than in the newer, eastern section, and reaching the west end requires transiting an area of high eastward current in the river. Nevertheless, it is still in use.
