Although listed as a GP7, the 1531's GP9 appearance is the result of a 1958 accident that saw it, and a sister, plunge through an open drawbridge into Newark Bay while hauling a Jersey City-bound commuter train. Upon their return from rebuilding, the two were devoid of steam generators, and coach-lighting compartment at the rear of the long hood, and thus rendered freight-only power.
