I know security was ridiculously high for this trip. What purpose did this train serve?

More properly called a "pilot train", this train was a final check for anything troublesome or suspicious that prior inspections may have missed. I suspect that running a full train over the tracks (rather than maintenance car alone) prior to the inaugural train may have had some value as an additional precaution.
