Well, isn't she a fat-boliered beauty! Amazing that she is under steam. Great to see a pre-1860 locomotive. We can have a better idea of just what those machines really looked like rather than relying on woodcut drawings. Also amazing is the Swiss penchant for being immaculate. Thank you for posting a very interesting photo.

This wonderful Museum piece is under steam while under tow because if it were towed for any great distance cold, there would be no lubrication going to the pistons and piston rings. In a steam locomotive the steam lubricator mixes lube oil with the steam going to the valves and then to the pistons and rings. Steam locomotives can be towed cold, if they have axle and main rod lubrication provided and the connecting rods linking the pistons to the main drivers have been removed so that the pistons are not being moved.
