Amazing, I live in this state, and have been here multiple times; yet I've never noticed this piece of history before.

In 1981 when I took my shot the Maine Central, still hosted a local and through freight. The other line, the Boston and Maine, had three freights each way daily. Now it is hard to say that even one train runs through here once a day. The paper mill at Groveton is shut down. It created traffic for a long daily local freight as well as MM&E. Three other mills in the area are shutting down or getting weak. There is hardly any growth traffic in this part of New Hampshire. What little there is gos to the MM&E. If there is a future for this junction it has to be tourists

I recall examining the Ball Signals some time in the '80's. They appeared to be made of some kind of styrofoam-like material.
