I've seen slug units, but what is a brake trailer? Seems odd that it would just be for braking, since all wagons are braked anyway. Have you got any more info on this?

Brake sleds are used for extra brake power when pushing cars over the hump in a hump yard. All of the cars are free rolling so they will coast down the hump into the yard.
