You were lucky to have beautiful weather. The day I rode, in July, it was raining with zero visibility and a temperature of 46 degrees at the summit. They told us Mt. Washington gets only 60 clear days a year.

I notice that ridership is not only holding up, but to the point of needing some extra runs, and that cycle time is reduced, thus probably more cash is going into the fare box. A second steam run after lunch, for those not inclined to get up early might prove popular.

Eventually in a generation or two those homebuilt diesel hydraulics will become historic locomotives themselves.
