From a limey point of view, I always preferred the EMD SDP40F, although the F40 is probably THE diesel locomotive most associated with Amtrak from a non-US viewpoint. Nice shot, Sir.

Having been stationed in the Boston area with the USCG during much of the early Amtrak era, I have to agree that initially the F40 PH seemed boxy, UGLY, and obnoxiously LOUD compared to the well-worn ( that's a KIND descripttion) (mostly) black ex-PC EMD Es that they replaced. It couldn't be denied though that the F40s WERE RELIABLE and FAST. Besides, HEP units were really needed to power the Amfleet cars, as I recall the generator cars seemed to have a nasty habit of catching fire for some reason.

I agree with the above comments. Now that the F40PH,s are almost gone they look very good to me.
