What a cool shot, Dan! I do so much appreciate you sharing your Rock Island shots with us. Even though I was a California guy as a kid, we would take a trip to Tennessee each summer along old 66 and the other highways that went east from OKC along the Choctaw Route towards Memphis. Even then there weren't many freights and I only saw the Budd car once that went from Memphis to Amarillo, I could always count on seeing the Rock and getting excited. Sure wish my dad would have taken some shots then...oh well. As an interesting thought: I cannot ever remember us going through Vega, Texas, and not seeing a Rock train switching the grain elevators there. It was always a highlight and my parents and I would wonder if there would be a diesel there - and there was! Thanks for sharing memories with me.

Thank you for posting these pics. I grew up right next to the Blue Island yard and have many good memories about going into down town Chicago on the E8. Now that I have a little bit more income, I'm recreating these trains to run on my home layout.
