Mike, I'd like to see a Big Boy run again too. There are several problems posed by operating a Big Boy today. There are no turntables long enough to turn one (wyes could substitute) and clearances and bridge ratings would have to be carefully checked, especially on double-track routes. Apparently the biggest problem is fuel - as you may know, the class can burn 26 tons of coal an hour. The result is not only a need for frequent replenishment of the bunker, but a deluge of sparks and cinders which can cause very serious fire problems along the right of way. The Big Boys' tenders were delivered equipped with a water spray device to limit this problem, a spray which carried back 20 carlengths! The solution would be to convert the engine to burn oil, as was done with 3985. However, some new engineering would be involved as no Big Boy was ever successfully converted to oil. And oil is now more expensive than ever. But it could be done -- other than sheer size, there's nothing unique about Big Boys.

I would also love to see her run again for its one of the best locomotives ever built.

I just saw 4018 the other day 12-29-07 and it looks a lot better than this now, definitely new paint job, I think they are in the process of restoring it, not to running condition though.
